Abstract
The previous chapters provided a review of the evolution of the different types of traditional homes in Serbia, within their historical and environmental context. We saw how previous authors developed various approaches to describe this architecture, and how there was continuous innovation as new ideas for constructing houses were developed. This in turn provided the groundwork for the research on this topic which forms the bulk of this book, and what will be presented in the coming chapters, starting with existing building stock.

A heating degree day is a metric for quantifying the amount of heating buildings in a given location will need over a certain period. One heating degree day represents conditions outside a building were equivalent to being below a defined threshold comfort temperature inside the building by one degree for one day.

Note, for all economic calculations in this case study, a mid-value of euro exchange rate of the National Bank of Serbia was used (1 EUR = 112.34 RSD, 03.01.2013, National Bank of Serbia 2013, for a comparison, on 15.07.2018 the mid-value was 1 EUR = 118.03 RSD). To obtain realistic results, costs of investments for proposed retrofits were calculated based on an average of at least three offers from local companies. The costs of the investments in the cities differed, mainly due to the different costs of working hours.
