Zusammenfassung
Social Media Geschichte zu schreiben ist ein prinzipiell transnationales und transmediales Unterfangen. Ausgehend von dieser Prämisse entwickelt der Beitrag seine Argumentation, warum es doch sinnvoll sein kann nationale Geschichten zu verfassen. Hierzu werden frühe Vorläufer von Social Media in Österreich, Soziale Medien und digitale Protestkultur sowie die Bedeutung von Sozialen Medien für politische Kommunikation thematisiert. Erste Versuche zur Etablierung von österreichischen Sozialen Medien zeigten, wie ein Zusammenspiel von medialen, kulturellen aber auch infrastrukturellen Faktoren und der technologische Fortschritt über den Erfolg von Plattformen entschieden haben und bestimmte Angebote rasch obsolet werden ließen. Mit dem Fall Unibrennt gab es in Österreich ein frühes Pilotbeispiel, in dem Social Media zur Mobilisierung, Organisation und öffentlichen Vermittlung von Protesten benutzt wurden. Social Media zur politischen Kommunikation wurden in Österreich hingegen nur zögerlich angenommen. Ausnahme war hierbei die FPÖ, die das Potential von Social Media zur ungefilterten Kommunikation mit AnhängerInnen früh erkannt hat.
