Abstract

This text discusses the context in which gender research in the UK has emerged, arguing that it has a rich research infrastructure but in 2017 few actual independent courses and degrees. UK gender research has a series of major preoccupations, loosely grouped together. These are: 1) family, social policy, welfare, work, health; 2) gender and development, postcoloniality, migration, nationhood and sexual politics, globalization; 3) media, representation, literature, film; 4) body, sexuality, queer; 5) feminist science studies, biotechnology, human/animal relations, affect; 6) feminist geography, conflict, security, peace. The rise of right-wing populist nationalism may influence the directions and topics taken up in gender research for the foreseeable future.
