Etwas mehr als 100 Jahre nach seiner Einführung in Brasilien bleibt der Fußball innerhalb der akademischen Debatte immer noch ein Randthema, auch wenn er ein Phänomen von nationaler und weltweiter Bedeutung ist. Der Historiker Eric Hobsbawm (1995, S. 196f.) erkannte im Fußball ein durch die britische Herrschaft weltweit verbreitetes und aufgrund seiner Einfachheit popularisiertes, authentisch universell-kulturelles Produkt – nur mit Rockmusik vergleichbar. In Brasilien sind vielleicht ganz wenige Angelegenheiten für die Konstruktion einer nationalen Identität so bedeutsam wie der Fußball, so der Soziologe Maurício Murad.
