Abstract

Power tunnels with high internal pressures are being constructed increasingly in association with hydroelectric power plants. Pressure heads may in part exceed 500 m with tunnel diameters of 4 to 5 m, Such internal pressures can seldom be transmitted directly to and carried by the surrounding rock mass. it is usually necessary to install a lining which interacts with the rock mass when loaded by internal water pressure and transmits a part of the loading to the rock mass in accordance with the ratio of the stiffnesses.
