Zusammenfassung
Die Tollwut (Wut, Rabies oder Lyssa; lateinisch: Lyssa hydrophobia, französisch: Ia rage, englisch: rabies, italienisch: rabbia, spanisch: rabia) ist eine meist durch Bißverletzungen infizierter Tiere — vorwiegend wild lebender Carnivoren oder Fledermäuse — übertragene Viruskrankheit. Sie ist vor allem unter den wildlebenden Carnivoren verbreitet und befällt von den Haustieren besonders Hunde und Katzen. Alle warmblütigen Wirbeltiere sind für sie empfänglich. Die Infektion führt beim Tier zu einer meist tödlich endenden Encephalomyehtis. — Auch der Mensch kann durch den Biß eines kranken Tieres infiziert werden. Wichtigste Infektionsquelle für den Menschen ist der Hund. Eine Übertragung von Mensch zu Mensch wurde bisher nicht beschrieben, obgleich sie theoretisch möglich erscheint.
