Zusammenfassung

In March 1983 I received a call from Prof. W. Simon, the Director of the Herbert von Karajan Salzburger Musikgespräche that would take place a month hence at the close of the Salzburg Easter Festival. The topic for that year’s symposium was ›Time in Music‹, for which an impressive panel of discussants from the physical, neurobiological, and computer sciences had been assembled. What was further needed was a musician who could discuss the role of musical time. I had written and spoken extensively on the subject, hence the invitation. The symposium led to my meeting Maestro von Karajan, and thereby opening a rich new chapter in my musical life.
