Zusammenfassung

Der folgende Beitrag enthält einen Überblick über die häufigsten Demenzerkrankungen in der zweiten Lebenshälfte, ihre Beziehungen zu der normalen Altersinvolution des Gehirns und den gegenwärtigen Stand der Demenzdiagnostik; einige zusätzliche Überlegungen gelten den allgemeinen Prinzipien der Behandlung. Während neurobiologische Grundlagen und klinische Symptomatik der Alzheimerschen und Pickschen Krankheit ausführlicher dargestellt sind, gehen wir auf die Gruppe der zerebrovaskulären Demenz nur am Rande ein, da dieses Thema in einem Kapitel von Band 6 (dieses Werkes) behandelt wurde (Brun u. Gustafson 1988). In Band 6 findet der Leser auch mehrere weitere Beiträge über primäre und sekundäre Hirnerkrankungen, die ein Demenz-Syndrom zur Folge haben können; diese Kapitel enthalten zahlreiche zusätzliche Informationen, die für eine genauere Kenntnis verschiedenartiger Formen der Demenz im Alter von Nutzen sind.
