Zusammenfassung

Seit sich vor einigen Jahren Massenmedien und Unterhaltungsindustrie in geradezu inflationärer Weise des Themas bemächtigt haben, stehen sich im öffentlichen Bewusstsein auf der einen Seite der „Serienkiller“ und auf der anderen Seite der „Profiler“ als Kontrahenten gegenüber. Mit Filmen wie „Das Schweigen der Lämmer“ und anderen realitätsfernen Produkten wird der Öffentlichkeit, aber auch unkritischen Teilen der Fachwelt, ein Bild von Polizeiarbeit vermittelt, das fern von der Realität ist. Dazu tragen auch einige „Profiler“ selbst bei, nicht zuletzt ein Teil jener FBI-Mitarbeiter, die sicher als Pioniere auf diesem Gebiet Verdienstvolles geleistet haben, sich jetzt aber zunehmend der publikumswirksamen Vermarktung ihrer Memoiren widmen (so z. B. [5, 18, 20]).
