Abstract

The term “environment” is new in many languages. In French, its origin goes back to twelfth century verb “environner”. In other languages new words were created during 1960s to express the concept: “Umwelt” in German, “Paryavaran” in Hindi, “Parisara” in Kannada, “Milieu” in Dutch, “Medio ambiente” in Spanish, “Meio ambiente” in Portuguese, “Al.biah” in Arabic, “kankyo” in Japanese, etc. Approximately 40 years ago, a large part of the world at the same time discovered a new phenomenon which posed a major challenge to modern society.
