Abstract
Shock waves with a Mach number 2.4–2.7 were observed in a two dimensional complex (dusty) plasma. It was found that initially crystalline (hexagonal) structure was melted by the shock and recrystallized later. Shocks with stable and unstable fronts were observed. The complex plasma is a mixture of macroscopic (micron-sized) grains with an ion-electron plasma which can exist in different phase states, sustain linear waves, shocks, solitons, Mach cones, and exhibit other collective effects. It can be studied at a kinetic level (i.e. motion of every grain) and therefore serve as a model system.
