Zusammenfassung
Nach dem Ende des Kalten Krieges ist sowohl die Nachfrage nach multilateraler Zusammenarbeit als auch die Bedeutung der Vereinten Nationen (VN) gestiegen. Die relative Vormachtstellung der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika gibt ihnen eine führende Rolle in den VN. Die derzeitige amerikanische Politik, z.B. im Bereich Friedenssicherung, verdeutlicht jedoch die weiterhin ambivalente Haltung der USA, die ihren Ausdruck auch in der Präferenz für einen begrenzten Multilateralismus findet, der den Hauptgeberländern eine bestimmende Rolle in den VN einräumt. Die amerikanische VN-Politik wird sich erst dann ändern, wenn die USA sich selbst stärker als Nutznießer der langfristigen Vorteile multilateraler Zusammenarbeit wahrnehmen.
