Abstract

Objective Problem statement: robots and robotic systems are expanding in numbers. This creates an opportunity to use robots in groups. Those groups may count few units and may count thousands of units functioning simultaneously or in sophisticated sequences. Application of robots in groups gives humans opportunity to solve new types of practical tasks, find new application areas for robots, implement new scenarios for them. Robots while in group can work differently in terms of quality and functionality. It creates new challenges for autonomy of robots and their groups. However for robots to be used in groups some technical and scientific tasks need to be solved. An option of robot to be able to be used in group will also affect structure of robot itself. Purpose of research: to review and systemize our knowledge about application of robots in groups, to flash on milestones on our way to use robots in groups. Results a review of advantages which creates usage or robots in groups. Examples of successful usage of robots in groups are given. List of scientific and technical topics to be addressed by robotists in their pursuit to use robots in groups. Also a brief review of scientific research performed in Russia in this area is presented. Practical significance the proposed thoughts could be used to systemize knowledge regarding application of robots in groups. Also it discusses scientific tasks to be solved in order for robots to used in groups.
