Abstract

A brief review of hiatal hernias provided by the authors. Presenting symptoms, imaging, and other diagnostic workup are described. Role of endoscopy as a diagnostic and occasional therapeutic tool are noted. The four classifications of hiatal hernia are provided. Distinction between urgent/emergent operative intervention requiring presentation and indications for elective repair are highlighted. Variations in surgical approach as well as fundoplication are mentioned.
