Abstract

An arterial venous (AV) shunt is a lifeline for patients on hemodialysis. Creation of the AV shunt is one of the most common procedures performed by vascular surgeons. The dialysis access can have complications which decrease the effectiveness of dialysis and can limit the life of the AV shunt. Maintenance of the dialysis access requires both open surgical and endovascular techniques. The most emergent of these complications is an occlusion of the dialysis access. This requires prompt re-establishment of blood flow and correction of the offending lesion. Understanding of the techniques and the rationale to de-clot the occluded AV shunt provides the basis for dealing with other complications that can arise.
