Abstract

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the most common cause of disability. Most strokes are ischemic and can be prevented by carotid revascularization. At the present time, indications for carotid endarterectomy (CEA) include asymptomatic stenosis of more than 80% or symptomatic stenosis of more than 50%. Current data shows superiority of CEA over carotid artery stenting (CAS) as first-line treatment.
