Abstract

A smaller number of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) patients may present later in life with typical postero-lateral defects. Morgagni hernias are centrally located anterior diaphragm defects. Rarely, an infant will be found to have an “intrathoracic stomach,” consistent with giant hiatal hernia. Correction is performed promptly. Late-presenting CDH may be repaired via laparotomy, thoracotomy, or thoracoscopy. For Morgagni hernias, laparoscopic repair is the method of choice. For giant hiatal hernias of infancy with an intrathoracic stomach, open or laparoscopic methods may be used. An antireflux procedure and a gastrostomy are also typically included.
