Abstract

Obesity is steadily increasing throughout the world with an increasing number of bariatric surgeries performed annually. The three most commonly performed procedures include adjustable gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy, and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Small bowel obstructions occurring in bariatric patients have a much higher rate of necessitating surgical intervention. Slippage of adjustable gastric bands leading to obstruction requires removal. Obstruction following sleeve gastrectomy requires endoscopic dilation or conversion to Roux-en-Y. Obstructions in the setting of Roux-en-Y require treatment of strictures and closure of mesenteric gaps preventing hernias following weight loss.
