Abstract
This chapter discusses the demand and supply of SSS services. It first focuses on the demand side and identifies the main cargoes by type and maritime region. The goods moved by short sea vessels are divided into six categories: liquid, dry bulk, containers, Roll on-Roll off (Ro-Ro) units, passengers, and other general cargo. Also, the chapter provides a detailed overview of the world’s main short sea shipping regions, highlighting the key routes and major corridors that have been established thus drawing a connection with several key emerging trends and developments that had a major impact or are currently affecting the short sea shipping sector. Next, the chapter turns to the supply side of the SSS market. The ship categorization corresponds to the carried cargoes. Finally, the chapter provides some statistical data about the stock of short sea ships.
