Abstract

Although mass shootings have occurred for decades, the Columbine High School shooting in 1999 marked a pivotal turning point on the understanding, anticipation, and preparedness for mass shooting events. Between Columbine and the more recent mass shootings in Las Vegas and Parkland, Florida (2017 and 2018, respectively), there have been over 70 mass shooting events in the United States. A total of 620 people have been killed, and over 1000 people have been wounded. The deadliest mass shooting in US history occurred in October 2017 when a lone gunman armed with multiple assault rifles opened fire on a music festival, killing 58 and wounding 546 people (Fig. 7.1).
