Abstract
Most variables used in clinical research studies can be described as belonging to one of three categories: continuous, categorical, or binary.
Continuous variables can take on an infinite number of possible values theoretically arising from anywhere along a (perhaps truncated) number line. Examples of continuous variables include body temperature, serum cholesterol levels, and left ventricular mass. Many continuous variables in clinical research studies can assume only positive values, such as weight and blood pressure, because negative values for these variables are scientifically impossible.
