Abstract
The incidence of gastric outlet obstruction in patients with peptic ulcer disease has decreased due to improvements in medical management. Yet gastric outlet obstruction still remains a significant problem that may require operative intervention and therefore demands surgical expertise and decision-making ability. In this chapter, we discuss the strategies of resection and reconstruction compared to drainage procedures and comprehensively review the relative advantages and disadvantages of each procedure. We also discuss the predominant complications associated with each procedure and the management strategies for these complications. Finally, we outline the key steps in decision-making to determine what procedure is most indicated for particular patient populations.
