Abstract

The present study shows the intervention of the risk factors related to the manual handling of loads, in tasks performed by 86 workers related to the burial procedures in five cemeteries in Chile.

Design proposals for handcrafted tweezers for the mobilization of tombstones; incorporation of engines to the funeral carts, bicycles with trolleys for the transport of gardening materials; eliminates and reduces the intensity of risk by 70%.

During the development of the investigation there were changes in the Chilean legislation regarding to the maximum weight allowed, decreasing from 50 to 25 kg. The above, together with the change in the administration of the company studied, gave a new orientation to the study.

Notes

  1. 1.

Document used in Chile, in which the task is recorded, the number of people exposed and, if necessary, apply specific risk assessment methodology, in this case ergonomic. Document from the risk prevention management.

  2. 2.

MAC Method - Manual Handling Assessment Chart, Monnington et al. 2003 (UK) Evaluation of risk factors for lifting tasks, individual and equipment lowering) and loads transport.

  3. 3.

Tables that provide maximum acceptable load and force values for lifting, lowering, transporting, pushing and pulling tasks (Snook 1978).

  4. 4.

“Semaphore” type method used in Chile that allows to link the intensity of the risk with a specific action level, in relation to the MAC method and LMT. Green color: Low risk level - Yellow color: Moderate risk level - Red color: High risk level - Purple color: Very high risk level.
