Abstract
Abnormalities of the skin including birthmarks and rashes in the newborn are often a source of concern for parents. However, most of these abnormalities are benign and self-limited. A birthmark is a congenital irregularity on the skin which is present at birth or appears shortly after birth, usually in the first month. They can occur anywhere on the body. Skin integrity including texture, hydration, and edema is part of any complete physical examination. Are these skin lesions primary or secondary? Are they static or evolving? This chapter will discuss the most common birthmarks and skin eruptions seen in the newborn and review diagnosis and management in the context of clinical cases.
