Cyberbullying Prevention and Intervention: Promising Approaches and Recommendations for Further Evaluation

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Bullying Prevention and Intervention at School

Abstract

This chapter examines the nature, prevalence, and impact of cyberbullying on youth and society as well as its relationship to traditional bullying. It reviews the current literature regarding prevention and intervention strategies to prevent and respond to cyberbullying and identifies promising models that may be infused with existing bullying prevention and intervention efforts. It also considers the efficacy of stand-alone practices to prevent cyberbullying such as Internet safety lessons and assembly style speakers, as well as targeted interventions for responding to cyberbullying. Finally, it recognizes the current lack of empirical data and makes recommendations for further evaluation to determine best practices in cyberbullying prevention and response and their relationship to comprehensive bullying prevention efforts.
