Abstract

Inpatient medical care of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be quite challenging. There is a lack of studies to guide providers in best practices and care of patients with ASD in the inpatient setting. Based upon our experience at Massachusetts General Hospital, we have developed special tools integrating the Electronic Health Record and a multidisciplinary approach with focused attention to input from families in order to provide the best quality of care for patients with ASD in the hospital. There is a significant need for further research in this area.
