Abstract
The experiences of receivers and providers of healthcare are unique and different and take place in the context of gender, gender identity, ethnicity, race, skin color, ability, and religion. They vary within our own individual lives as our age, health, socioeconomic, and marital status change. They are impacted by our past experiences and the perceptions we have formed based on our knowledge and life experiences. Those of us who live in First World countries often fail to consider or take for granted the availability of cutting-edge medical care. However, healthcare that takes place in a global context is vastly different for various groups of patients. A global perspective on healthcare and cultural competency is presented in this chapter.
