Abstract
Chapter 7 deals with antibiotic prophylaxis and treatment: An overview is provided of the need and opportunities for and the risks of prophylactic, empirical, and targeted antibiotic therapy in the context of pediatric cardiac intensive care therapy. Besides a description of site-specific standards, an explanation is given on how to handle problem organisms, drugs, and their side effects and interactions. The clinical features and treatment of generalized and organ-related infections in pediatric intensive care patients are also addressed.
