Abstract

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cause of cancer in both men and women. The liver represents the most common site for distant metastases in colorectal cancer, and more than 60% of the patients will develop liver metastases during the course of the disease. Colorectal liver metastases were traditionally considered incurable, and patients were managed in a palliative manner only. This is no longer the case, and there is evidence suggesting that interventions to the liver metastases can achieve long-term survival benefits, both in terms of overall and disease-free survival. The management of colorectal liver metastases has become a very complex multidisciplinary process. This complexity relies on more detailed diagnoses, careful preoperative assessment and multidisciplinary approaches with combinations of systemic treatments and locoregional treatments to the liver. This chapter describes the main aspects of the diagnostic and therapeutic strategies available and provides an overview of the current management of colorectal liver metastases.
