Lung Transplantation

Abstract

The quantity and quality of donors continue to limit the number of lung transplants performed every year. Approximately 300 patients expire or are removed from the lung waiting list because they became too sick to transplant. Aggressive donor management, expansion of donor selection criteria, use of donors after circulatory determination of death, and use of ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) to screen the unused donor pool for viable organs are some of the strategies that are currently in place to reduce this gap. The purpose of this report is to review the most recent clinical and research publications and to summarize their findings.
