Abstract

South Asian Americans comprise one of the largest and fastest growing Asian immigrant subgroups. However, research on the health care needs of this population remains sparse. Although South Asian communities are diverse and have distinct immigration histories, they share common cultural values including collectivism, cultural understanding of morality, and gender role expectations. These values along with systemic inequities, such as acculturative stress and race-based discrimination, can have a unique influence on the health of the South Asian Americans. It is important that health care providers are aware of the influence of cultural values on South Asian American patients, as well as be equipped to provide culturally competent health care to this population.
