Abstract
This chapter explores bottom-up interventions in the spatial planning process in Greece and attempts to categorize, understand, and evaluate them, while drawing attention to relevant European experience and practice. It presents a selection of case studies to create a typology of bottom-up initiatives in Greece, primarily based on the actors involved and the formal or informal character of the initiatives. The chapter describes their level of integration in the mainstream planning process, their on-the-ground characteristics, and their main short- and long-term results. The basic research for this chapter uncovered interactions between civic society initiatives and responses by official authorities, especially during times of economic crisis.

Urban planning cultures in the frame of civil society initiatives and protests,” supported by the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (IKY) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and carried out by the Urban Planning Research Laboratory/National Technical University of Athens (Prof. Konstantinos Serraos) and the Institute of Environmental Planning/Leibniz University Hannover (Prof. Frank Othengrafen).

The dialogue was based on rules already formulated by the administration, including various actions of a direct and representative citizen participation, organized by thematic field according to a flow chart and a three-year timeframe.
