Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of European monetary policy and the British response to it between 1976 and 2007 with a particular focus on the two case studies of the present study: the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM), the centre piece of the European Monetary System (EMS), and Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).
