Abstract

Prognosis of patients with gastric cardiac cancer is significantly correlated to pathologic tumor-node-metastasis stages. The most important difference in prognosis between patients with gastric cardiac cancer and those with esophageal adenocarcinoma is the stage III disease. Because prognosis of patients with gastric cardiac cancer can be better stratified by the staging rules for gastric cancer, both the International Gastric Cancer Association and the American Joint Committee on Cancer (the eighth edition) published the staging guidelines in 2017 and required staging this cancer with the scheme for gastric cancer. Pathologists have to thoroughly evaluate resection specimens and appropriately stage each case with a complete synoptic report for patient triage, cancer registry data collection, and clinicopathologic research.
