Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is three-fold: (1) to examine the coastal states’ perceptions of the Arctic in terms of their vision of the region as either the platform for cooperation or conflict; (2) to briefly review the Arctic’s existing and potential international conflicts; and (3) to analyze legal, political, and institutional mechanisms for conflict resolution, which exist at the regional and global levels. The authors further argue that in order to achieve better regional cooperation, Arctic states must be clearer in their military policies and doctrines and must also look toward reviving regional and global governance institutions to develop a solid institutional backing in the ultimate agenda of creating an amiable space for all Arctic states.
