Abstract

The article presents football in Uruguay based on its exceptional character as a small country with many international trophies. Historically the English introduced football during the period of modernisation of the country. The link between the special characteristics of Uruguayan society that enable social and cultural integration through football is considered. It exposes the political and social news that football has, as well as it examines the hundred year-long rivalry between Nacional and PeƱarol.
