Abstract

Acute urinary retention is a common consequence of gynaecological surgery and if unrecognized can lead to irreversible bladder damage. Units must have clear guidelines and staff must be constantly vigilant with the at risk group. Regular post-operative or post-delivery monitoring should prevent acute overdistension. Patients with voiding dysfunction should be referred to specialist Urogynaecology or urology for further investigations and long term management.
