Abstract

This chapter is part of Sama’s attempt to advance more clarity and nuance on the vexed question of commercial surrogacy in India. It reflects thematically on interviews with activists and experts from key social movements in India on which surrogacy have a bearing. It problematises the themes of commercialisation, draws parallels with sex work, and child rights and provides a bioethical and public health perspective on the ethical and regulatory issues of surrogacy. The chapter concludes with a call to bring new perspectives and movements into conversation and collaboration so as to respond to the challenges posed by surrogacy.

The authors would like to dedicate this chapter to Preet Rustagi, a friend and comrade, who passed away unexpectedly in 2017.
