Abstract
Patient navigation in cancer care represents a significant advance in improving the quality of cancer care delivery, by focusing on meeting patients’ needs and optimizing care coordination. Originally conceived as a means to address disparities in underserved populations, patient navigation has evolved as an essential strategy for enhancing outcomes in quality, including the patient experience of care. Empirical research on the impact of navigation is still emerging; however, preliminary results indicate improvements in clinical care and a potential positive return on investment. Ultimately, all patients affected by cancer may benefit to some degree from the added coordination, education, and advocacy provided by patient navigators.
