Abstract
Melanoma is rare in children and presents with atypical features in comparison to adult melanoma. Adding to the diagnostic difficulty is the plethora of melanocytic neoplasms that are common in the pediatric population. It is often not possible to classify a lesion as unequivocally benign or melanoma, which pose challenges to the pathologist and treating physicians. This chapter focuses on the diagnosis and classification of atypical melanocytic neoplasms and melanoma in pediatric patients. Strategies for management of localized and advanced disease are reviewed including the role of sentinel lymph node biopsy, completion lymphadenectomy, adjuvant therapy and treatment of metastatic disease.
