Heart Failure in Adult Congenital Heart Disease

Abstract

General cardiologists, emergency room physicians, family doctors and intensivists are all increasingly likely to be faced with an ACHD patient in acute heart failure (HF). Improved awareness of the triggers, pathophysiology and options for management should result in fewer delays, better treatment and improved outcomes. Whilst guidelines exist for the management of chronic HF in ACHD, data and/or guidelines for acute HF are scarce. The ACHD population is heterogeneous and often quite different from patients with acquired heart disease, posing a challenge to the non-specialist and specialist physician alike. This chapter focuses on acute HF in ACHD with illustrative case studies to highlight key messages.
