Abstract

In this section, the results of my quantitative assessment of secondary data and the results from the three detailed case studies are merged and jointly discussed. The aim here is to achieve a holistic understanding of the influence of energy cooperatives on Germany’s on-going energy transition.

Notes

  1. 1.

See Sect. 2.2 for more details on existing studies about energy cooperatives.

  2. 2.

See Sect. 2.2 for a detailed discussion of previous studies.

  3. 3.

As outlined in Chap. 2, German cooperatives are, according to cooperative law (GenG), obligated to become members of a cooperative auditing association (genossenschaftlicher Prüfungsverband).

  4. 4.

In Sect. 8.1, it was pointed out that energy cooperatives not only offer participation options for citizens but also for politicians, regional companies and associations.

  5. 5.

The empirical approach is described in Sect. 5.2.

  6. 6.

As described in Sects. 3.4 and 6.1.1, the tendering model for photovoltaic and wind power plants is one of the most central elements of EEG 2014 and EEG 2016, according to which all actors intending to install new wind and solar power capacity are required to participate in nation-wide tenders for power capacity.

  7. 7.

Provided that system boundaries are equal to the boundaries of a nation state.

  8. 8.

As outlined in Sect. 4.2.2.3, I differentiate between creating legitimation and creating acceptance.

  9. 9.

It is often argued that niches are always protected by national regulations such as subsidies. In this thesis, I have argued that regulations are part of a regime, proposing that niches and regimes always co-evolve and can never be seen separately from each other (see Sect. 4.1.4.2 for critical reflection on this widely held idea about niches).
