Abstract

Cancer is a major public health problem all over the world. Increases in the number of individuals diagnosed with cancer each year, due in large part to aging and growth of the population, as well as improving detection and survival rates, have led to an ever-increasing number of cancer survivors. Various environmental, genetic and dietary factors play a role in cancer causation and prognosis. Advances in our understanding of the cellular and molecular basis of the gastrointestinal (GI) neoplasia have provided a foundation for the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.Cancer takes a toll not only on the patients but also on the patients near and dear ones resulting in physical and psychological manifestations in the caregivers. Hence it is essential for the medical fraternity to employ a holistic and multi disciplinary approach in the management of cancer and its sequelae be it physical or psychological.
