Abstract

This chapter describes and analyzes a research project undertaken by a multidisciplinary team, including scholars from France, the USA, and Brazil, which was formed to respond the French government’s 2011 research program Ignis mutat res. The proposal aimed to study the effects of the energy transition on mobility policy and practices, as well as on urban form, in three metropolitan areas: Bordeaux, Cincinnati, and Curitiba. After a brief presentation of the project’s research methodology and results, the chapter focuses on the key factors that contributed to the endeavor’s positive outcome, as well as on the limiting factors and obstacles encountered. It aims to contribute to understanding the parameters involved in collaborations between contrasting national and institutional cultures, as transnational research becomes increasingly important in light of global challenges such as climate change.

Notes

  1. 1.

Urban mobility in this context refers to the general phenomenon by which people and goods move about urban environments, meaning cities and their surrounding areas of influence. While the term mobility concerns transportation in its practical and measurable dimensions, it aims to grasp these within the broader social and cultural fields that influence citizens’ desires, expectations, and efforts regarding their access to different areas and resources in the city, as well as to goods (see Cresswell 2011; Massot 2010; Orfeuil 2010; Sheller and Urry 2006).

  2. 2.

Regarding post-graduate studies, the education system in Brazil distinguishes between lato sensu degrees, which concern specializations and are not a basis for subsequent research career, and stricto sensu degrees, including research masters, doctoral degrees, and post-doctoral research, which prepare for academic work.

For these authors, disciplinary projects take place within the bounds of a single, currently recognized academic discipline; multidisciplinary studies as projects that involve several different academic disciplines researching one theme or problem but with multiple disciplinary goals; participants exchange knowledge, but do not aim to cross subject boundaries to create new knowledge and theory; participatory studies as projects that involve academic researchers and nonacademic participants working together to solve a problem; interdisciplinary studies as projects that involve several unrelated academic disciplines in a way that forces them to cross subject boundaries to create new knowledge and theory and solve a common research goal; transdisciplinary studies as projects that both integrate academic researchers from different unrelated disciplines and nonacademic participant and combines interdisciplinarity with a participatory approach (Tress et al. 2005).
