Abstract
This chapter sets out a manualized approach to conducting short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy. At the macro level, three broad phases are described: engagement, emotion processing and termination. The objectives of each phase of therapy and the specific interview tasks and methods are detailed in action statements. This chapter covers the areas of assessment, history taking, identification of emotions, defences, relational focus and formulation. Specific question types and verbal interventions are described. The use of choice point action alternatives is identified. The action alternatives consist of therapeutic interventions and are grouped into priority sets.
