Abstract
A flap is tissue with its own blood supply that is transferred to another bodily area. The majority of flaps used in periocular reconstruction are adjacent tissue transfer flaps, also known as random pattern flaps (i.e., flaps that are not based on axial arterial blood supply). In oculoplastic surgery, flaps are usually classified as (1) sliding, (2) advancement, (3) rotation, or (4) transposition.
Due to an abundance of blood supply in the periorbital area, the flap length-to-width ratio can exceed the 3:1 or 5:1 ratio needed for survival in nonfacial areas.
