In this chapter we introduce the basic quantities that are needed in the implementation of the “entropy dissipation method” for the study of the asymptotics of Markov chains, which will be presented in Section 7.4. This is a very minimal introduction to information theory; for more details we strongly recommend consulting [2, 7, 16, 22].
