Abstract

The SAFESCHOOLS curriculum was developed by the author, Dr. Kalyani Gopal, Ph.D. in collaboration with Sandra Demos-Kelley, Ed.D., who worked in the Chicago public schools for 30 years in the Inglewood area as an assistant principal and as a licensed clinical social worker. The purpose of developing the SAFESCHOOLS program has been to train children at a very young age to develop self-awareness, prevent human trafficking, and develop resilience and ability to recover from trauma. While this is primarily a prevention program, the SAFESCHOOLS program is also meant to support recovery from traumatic events by teaching fundamental cognitive processes and skills. Ten skills will be described that are ten modules of the SAFECHR (SAFE Coalition for Human Rights) SAFESCHOOLS program.
