Abstract
This chapter turns to a discussion of theories on economic development and its application to political agendas. This section finds relative importance in understanding the different types of economic development theories which prevail in government so that society is not surprised by the type of policies that manifest under various political administrations. Given this, the current political agenda of President Trump is evaluated. Select policies that were highly promoted during his presidential campaign and in his first year in office are represented in this chapter. A brief description of each bill or policy is provided, the President’s position is articulated as well as the impact each could potentially have on rural populations. President Trump’s political behavior is then examined to determine the type of (economic) polity that currently governs the U.S. and if Trump’s policy intentions will either hurt or help rural America.
