Abstract
Sexual disorders are highly prevalent in the elderly, yet little is known about them. They include sexual dysfunctions, paraphilic disorders, and gender dysphoria. Sexual dysfunctions are characterized by diminished or absent sexual interests and imbalance in physiological and psychological patterns. Paraphilias represent deviant or perverse sexual behavior, while gender dysphoria is the condition of a person feeling that their gender identity is opposite to their biological sex. These problems can get aggravated by the process of aging or by the presence of multiple stressors and chronic conditions. Physicians should give these patients the opportunity to voice their concerns regarding sexual functions and offer alternatives for evaluations and treatment. In this chapter we review the epidemiology, neurobiology, diagnosis, and treatments for these important disorders.
The behavior of a human being in sexual matters is often a prototype for whole of his other modes of reactions in life.
